Babies Arrive, Sakes Alive!!

Students in the Family Dynamics class were issued "Baby Alive Learns to Potty" dolls on May 1st as a class project.  Class members are asked to focus on being responsible for the wants and needs of a dependant being.  These battery powered baby girls are able to talk, sing, play, eat, drink, and potty.  Each class member is supplied a potty, diapers, bottles, dishes, spoons, food, juice, and wipes.  Decorated bed boxes are individually labeled in the newly set up daycare center at the school.  Charts are clipped to each bed and have to be filled in with arrival times, times of subsequent checks throughout the school day, class time feeding, cleaning, and changing.  Departure for home will be the last entry each day.  If left with a responsible "sitter", slips have to be signed by the sitter and turned in by the "parent".  Bed times will also be noted each night and reported the following morning.  The babies have to be awakened from sleep mode before they are returned to the the daycare each morning.  Being allowed to go to the cafeteria each day with their "parent" will be a special treat for the toddlers.  Many aunts, step-parents, and other relatives will be needed to hold and entertain the babies while their parent eats.  All the participants should have a good attitude which will make this assignment fun, but at the same time provide them with a learning experience they will carry with them forever.

Star Teacher and Star Student

Kristi Hager and J. D. Wynne

John D. Wynne has been named as a STAR (Student-Teacher Achievement Recognition) Student for the 2008-2009 school year by the Mississippi Economic Council's M. B. Swayze Educational Foundation, sponsor of the STAR program.  J. D. is the son of David and Julianna Wynne.  He is a member of the MPSA Honor Society, where he served as Vice President this year.  He was selected as most improved football player in the the 11th grade.  He represents the football team on the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and he has received the highest average award in numerous subjects.  J. D. plans to attend Holmes Community College and then MSU where he plans to persue a degree in Aerospace Engineering.

The Central Holmes Christian School senior will be honored during the 19th annual Education Celebration on April 16 at the Jackson Convention Center in downtown Jackson. This prestigious event is co-sponsored by Entergy Mississippi, AT&T, Mississippi Power Company, BancorpSouth, and Trustmark National Bank.

STAR Students are selected on the basis of academic excellence. Both American College Test scores and scholastic averages are compared to determine the school's STAR Student, explained Vickie Powell of Jackson, Vice President, Foundation Programs. "The STAR program encourages and promotes academic achievement among Mississippi's high school seniors," she said.

Each STAR Student is asked to designate a STAR Teacher, the classroom teacher who has made the greatest contribution to the student's scholastic achievement.

Kristi L. Hager was designated STAR Teacher. Mrs. Hager has been teaching for a total of 16 years and has received the honor of Star Teacher for 5 years.

Over 500 STAR Students and STAR Teachers will receive recognition from MEC's Swayze Foundation at the Celebration. The top 20 STAR Students -- the ALL-STAR Scholars -- and their STAR Teachers will be presented scholarship awards provided by the Kelly Gene Cook, Sr. Charitable Foundation. The highlight of the Education Celebration will be the naming of the Mississippi STAR Student for 2009, winner of the coveted $24,000 Cook Foundation scholarship.

Cody Thomas

Youth Leadership Winner Announced

Yazoo Valley Electric Power Association in conjunction with the Electric Power Association of Mississippi sponsors two high school juniors each year in the National Youth Leadership Program.  This year's students were chosen among several great applicants.  Cody Thomas was one of two area juniors chosen to represent Yazoo Valley Electric in the 2009 program. Cody is a junior at Central Holmes Christian School.  He is the son of Monica and Tommy Thomas of Lexington.  He was chosen based on an interview process.  Cody will join 63 other high school juniors from across the state at the Youth Leadership Workshop in Jackson in March.  He will have the chance to experience firsthand how our state government operates.  In addition to a visit to the state legislature, he will also have the opportunity to have breakfast with state legislators, meet the governor, and participate in activities to build leadership abilities. In June, Cody will participate in a week long tour of our nation's capital, Washington, D. C.  Here, he will visit the popular monuments, memorials, the Capital building, the White House and much more.  During this week, students will meet many other young people from across the country, participating in the program from other states. The purpose of the Youth Leadership Program is to identify leaders and present opportunities for them to advance in their skills.
